Elephant Falls

1 Day

Overview

Elephant Falls is one of Shillong’s most iconic and frequently visited waterfalls, renowned for its three-tiered cascade, lush green surroundings, and easy accessibility. Located approximately 12 km from Shillong City, this picturesque waterfall is nestled amidst dense forests and rolling hills in the East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya.

Originally known as “Ka Kshaid Lai Pateng Khohsiew”, meaning “The Three-Step Waterfall” in the Khasi language, the falls were later renamed “Elephant Falls” by the British after a large elephant-shaped rock that once stood beside the waterfall. Although the rock was destroyed during an earthquake in 1897, the name has remained. Today, Elephant Falls continues to captivate visitors with its cascading waters, peaceful atmosphere, and scenic beauty, making it one of the must-visit attractions in Meghalaya.
